Samsung partners with OpenAI on global AI data centres

  • Samsung to supply memory for OpenAI’s Stargate project
  • Partnership covers semiconductors, shipbuilding, and cloud services
  • Floating data centres planned to cut cooling costs and emissions

Strategic agreement signed in Seoul

Samsung and OpenAI have signed a letter of intent to work together on developing global AI data centre infrastructure. The partnership brings together several Samsung divisions, including Samsung Electronics, Samsung SDS, Samsung C&T, and Samsung Heavy Industries, alongside OpenAI. The announcement was made at a ceremony in Seoul attended by Samsung Vice Chairman & CEO Young Hyun Jun and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Supplying high-performance memory

Samsung Electronics will act as a strategic memory partner for OpenAI’s Stargate initiative. This project is expected to drive significant demand for advanced semiconductors, with OpenAI’s projected memory requirements reaching up to 900,000 DRAM wafers per month. Samsung will supply high-performance, energy-efficient DRAM solutions to meet this scale.

Building and managing AI data centres

Samsung SDS will collaborate with OpenAI on the design, development, and operation of the Stargate AI data centres. This includes providing consulting, deployment, and management services for businesses using OpenAI’s AI models. The agreement also grants Samsung SDS reseller rights for OpenAI’s services in Korea, giving local companies access to ChatGPT Enterprise and related offerings.

Floating infrastructure under study

To address rising cooling costs, land shortages, and carbon emissions, Samsung Heavy Industries and Samsung C&T will explore offshore facilities for AI data centres. Plans include floating power plants and control hubs designed to provide scalable infrastructure while reducing environmental impact.

Logistics and workplace integration

Samsung SDS will also bring its logistics platform, Cello Square, into the collaboration. The platform uses AI and automation to improve freight and supply chain management worldwide. At the same time, Samsung is testing wider use of ChatGPT within its own operations to enhance productivity and accelerate workplace transformation.

National and industry ambitions

The agreement aligns with South Korea’s ambition to be a global leader in artificial intelligence. The collaboration is expected to open new opportunities across the technology sector while strengthening Samsung’s existing SmartThings ecosystem and AI portfolio.
